Aligning anchor points

Today I want to share with you this quick-tip. Illustrator (just like InDesign and Photoshop and other design apps) has a panel for aligning objects.

What’s special about Illustrator is that you can also align anchor points. To do this, you have to use the direct selection tool – the white arrow that can be activated via the shortcut “A” – to select the desired anchor points and then perform the corresponding alignment function. The following applies:

  • Click the “Align Top” button, will be aligned to the top anchor point
  • Click the "Align Bottom" button, will be aligned to the lowest anchor point
  • If you click the "Align Center" button, the average mean position of all selected anchor points will be calculated.

Using a Key Anchor Point

As with objects, you can also specify a key object – in this case a key anchor point – for anchor points. To make this happen, the last thing you need to do is add the anchor point that you want to choose as the key anchor point by holding down the SHIFT key. After that you will also see that the option “key anchor point” has been activated in the Align Panel.

For the alignment it is not relevant whether you align at the top, bottom or center, because you have defined the key anchor point. All other anchor points will be aligned to it.
